This artist has signed some ten fine still lifes, some of them dated 1659, 1660 or 1661. The manner of their execution suggests they were painted in Flanders or in Holland. Arranged around a skull and an extinguished candle – classic vanitas motifs – are the attributes of a man of the world: the arts and the sciences, hunting and fine food, and five bulging money bags representing possession and wealth – in short, all the mundane attractions that men must give up to gain redemption. The charm of these Golden Age vanitas paintings lies clearly in this very paradox.
