Emanuel de Witte
(Alkmaar 1617-1692 Amsterdam)
View of the choir of St John’s church in Utrecht from the nave
Copper, 22.6 x 261 cm; dated 16[54?]
Acquired in 1928; inv. 3551

Emanuel de Witte was one of the most gifted Dutch architecture painters. In around 1650 he started to concentrate on church interiors. The interior shown here is one of his earlier works and is unusual because of its small size, the use of gold paint as well as gold leaf and the fact that it was painted on copper. The subject, the interior of a church in Utrecht, is also unique: it is the only known work in which De Witte depicted a church there and one of the few paintings of a building outside Delft and Amsterdam, the cities in which he mainly worked.
