Paulus Potter
(Enkhuizen 1625-1654 Amsterdam)
Landscape with cattle and a milkmaid
Panel, 35.8 x 49.7 cm; signed and dated 1643
Acquired in 1948; inv. 5982

This painting is an early work by Paulus Potter. It is the first time that the famous animal painter pictured not a historical or pastoral subject in a landscape, but a group of animals – cows, sheep and goats. The animals are the main subject of the painting: the woman milking the cow on the right is barely visible behind the large beast. The viewer’s attention is caught by the two kids playing, which add more vitality to the scene. The vegetation in the right foreground, in which a frog can be discerned, is depicted in great detail.
