Pieter Stevens
(Mechelen c. 1567 - after 1624 Prague)
Feast on the anniversary of a church consecration
Panel, 34 x 42 cm; dated 1594
Acquired in 1938; inv. 1305

Pieter Stevens set this crowded kermis or fair in and around the inn – held to mark the anniversary of the consecration of a church – in Rome, although it was actually a northern tradition. The church in the background on the right has been identified as Santa Maria in Cosmedin on the Forum Boarium. The date 1594, which can be seen on the inn sign, indicates that the painting dates from the year Stevens was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolph II in Prague. He probably never went to Rome himself, so he must have borrowed his Roman monuments from other artists’ work.
