Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Jacques in Paris
Canvas, 32.5 x 24.7 cm; signed and dated 1879

In his later work Jongkind delighted in depicting simple Parisian street scenes. The Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Jacques, here being cleared of snow by a number of hard-working street sweepers, is an example. Jongkind plays with the colour contrast between the white of the snow, the black figures and coach and the almost pastel colours of the houses. Compared with his early work (
cf. no. 92), his brushstroke becomes looser, already heralding the work of the Impressionists.
