Isaak van Nickele
(Haarlem ? c. 1633-1703 Haarlem)
Interior of the church of St Bavo in Haarlem
Panel, 46 x 302 cm; signed and dated 1670
Acquired in 1958; inv. 7161

Isaac van Nickele was a member of the last generation of seventeenth-century architecture painters. He worked in the style of Pieter Saenredam, one of whose paintings also depicting the interior of the Church of St Bavo, can be seen in the exhibition (cf. no. 53). Van Nickele painted a monumental pillar on the right, which acts as a repoussoir for the view into the church on the left. The panel, which bears the date 1670 on the pillar, is one of his earliest dated paintings; most of his other dated works were done around 1690 and later.
