David Teniers the Younger
(Antwerp 1610-1690 Brussels)
Adoration of the shepherds, after Andrea Schiavone (c. 1522-1563)
Panel, 31.2 x 21.2 cm
Acquired in 1942; inv. 5796
This sketch is one of a series of copies that the painter executed after paintings from the collection of Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, governor of the Spanish Netherlands. Teniers was his official painter and from 1655 onwards he copied paintings for the Theatrum Pictorium
, a book of engravings ‘of the principal Italian paintings of the Archduke’s collection at the court of Brussels’, published in 1660. The painting by Andrea Schiavone was transported to Vienna with the rest of the collection and is today at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The frame originally contained the sketch in the collection of the Duke of Marlborough, who had acquired many of these studies for the book.
