Jacob van Ruisdael
(Haarlem 1628/29-1682 Amsterdam)
Dunes with a herdsman and his herd
Panel, 19.5 x 26.3 cm; monogrammed
Acquired in 1952; inv. 6484

In this small painting, the famous landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael deftly captured both the threatening storm and the last ray of sunshine illuminating part of a dune on the right, so that the grass and the sand seem to glitter. The herdsman on the left hurrying his herd to safety was probably painted by another artist, quite possibly Adriaen van de Velde (cf. no. 74). Although this painting is small, a powerful, expressive landscape like this is typical of Ruisdael’s work.
