Jan Both
(Utrecht c. 1618-1652 Utrecht)
Mountain landscape with a bridge
Panel, 47 x 62.4 cm; signed
Acquired in 1949; inv. 6040

Jan Both is a major representative of the second generation of Dutch Italianate painters. This landscape is typical of his paintings: a high mountain closes off one side of the composition, while on the other it opens into the distance. Among the figures in the scene is a draughtsman, a favourite motif of Both’s. The bridge is inspired by the Ponte dell’Acquoria west of Tivoli, which was often depicted by Dutch painters who sojourned in Italy and pictured the monument in numerous drawings. Both must have based this painting on one of his own drawings featuring this motif, probably after his return to Holland.
