Caspar Netscher
(Heidelberg or Prague 1635/39-1684 The Hague)
Portrait of the collector Abraham van Lennep
Canvas, 55 x 45.3 cm; signed and dated 1672
Acquired in 1976 with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt; inv. 1976-s.1
This signed and dated painting dates from a period when Caspar Netscher was for the most part producing portraits. His elegant style resembles that of other portrait painters in The Hague like Jan Mijtens (
cf. no. 67). The portrait of Abraham van Lennep (1627-1678) shows the print and drawings collector in an interior. He points to an album lying open in front of him in which he kept his works on paper, while a loose drawing and a manuscript are also displayed on the table. Other albums can be seen in a cabinet on the left, underlining his status as a collector.
