Caspar Netscher
(Heidelberg or Prague 1635/39-1684 The Hague)
Portrait of the collector Abraham van Lennep
Canvas, 55 x 45.3 cm; signed and dated 1672
Acquired in 1976 with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt; inv. 1976-s.1

This signed and dated painting dates from a period when Caspar Netscher was for the most part producing portraits. His elegant style resembles that of other portrait painters in The Hague like Jan Mijtens (cf. no. 67). The portrait of Abraham van Lennep (1627-1678) shows the print and drawings collector in an interior. He points to an album lying open in front of him in which he kept his works on paper, while a loose drawing and a manuscript are also displayed on the table. Other albums can be seen in a cabinet on the left, underlining his status as a collector.
