Karel du Jardin
(Amsterdam 1626-1678 Venice)
River landscape with cattle and figures
Panel, 28.7 x 36.5 cm; signed
Acquired in 1951; inv. 6462
Throughout his life Karel du Jardin painted southern landscapes but probably only travelled to Italy for the first time towards the end of his life. This serene mountain landscape at sunset dates from the 1660s and contrasts with the characteristic idyllic landscapes of the Dutch Italianates. Together with similar works in the Louvre and Cambridge and landscape etchings from the late 1650s, it is at the same time a tranquil interlude in the oeuvre of this versatile artist.
