While the Frits Lugt Collection owes much of its fame to its prints and drawings, the c. 220 old master paintings are an important component. They are generally small paintings, so-called cabinet pieces, by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish masters. Works by painters such as Pieter Saenredam, Aelbert Cuyp and Jan Davidsz. de Heem are seen to better advantage in the atmosphere of a private home than in a museum gallery. They were after all intended for domestic interiors. The rooms in the Hôtel Turgot, where the collection is housed, have this kind of intimate atmosphere and the paintings form a natural part of the ambience.
