Ger Luijten appointed new director of Fondation Custodia The Board of Directors of Fondation Custodia-Frits Lugt Collection proudly announces the appointment of Mr. Ger Luijten as Director of Fondation Custodia, effective as of 1 June 2010. Ger Luijten, who at present heads the Rijksprentenkabinet of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, will succeed Ms Mària van Berge Gerbaud, who after 38 years of service--including sixteen as Director--is retiring. ‘The same love for art’ Thanks in part to the breadth of his experience, Ger Luijten (1956) will be a valuable asset to the Fondation Custodia. After studying art history at the University of Utrecht, he spent a number of years compiling Hollstein’s Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts 1450-1700, about the history of printmaking, the series that he now co-edits. In 1987 he became curator of prints and drawings at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, before moving to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in 1990 as curator of prints. In 2001 he became head of the Printroom (Rijksprentenkabinet). That is where the founder of the Fondation Custodia, Frits Lugt, discovered his love for prints and drawings. Between the ages of twelve and fifteen, Frits Lugt described nearly a thousand drawings in the form of a catalogue. Ger Luijten shares Lugt's passion for graphic art and intends to carry on the work of the Foundation in the spirit of its founder. Ger Luijten serves on the editorial board of the journal Simiolus and has initiated various art historical publications. In 2009 he was elected President of the International Advisory Committee of Keepers of Collections of Graphic Art. The Fondation Custodia The Fondation Custodia was established in 1947 by the Dutch collector Frits Lugt (1884-1970) for the purpose of managing his collections of Old Master drawings, prints, paintings, books and artists’ letters. Lugt was a prolific art historian whose works are still relevant. The Frits Lugt Collection, comprising some 90,000 works of art, is preserved in Paris and is accessible by appointment. The Fondation Custodia frequently lends to exhibitions. Only recently, for instance, the French drawings of the Fondation Custodia were exhibited at The Frick Collection in New York. The Fondation Custodia is also actively involved in scholarly research, besides organizing exhibitions on the premises of the Institut Néerlandais in Paris and elsewhere.
